Portland and Imago Dei
We're in Portland for the next couple of days with another part of the body here called Imago Dei. The book "Jesus in the Margins" was written by Rick McKinley - the pastor here and if you've read "Blue Like Jazz" or "Searching for God Knows What" by Don Miller - you have heard of Imago Dei. You can check out their web site by clicking below

Hey Dean,
I just finished reading Rick McKinley's book. It was pretty good. From Don Miller's books and this book as well, it is pretty obvious that community is really important to him. As you know, I have been critical of making "community" such a high priority because it seems to be the easy thing to fall back on to make everyone feel good. After reading Rick's book and also from Don Miller's books, it seems that Imago Dei has been able to make community an outward focused thing. I'm trying to figure out a question to ask but I guess I'd just like to know more about what it really looks like for them and if it really is as much of a priority as I have read into it being.
Hey bro! Great question. My experience of "community" with Soma was profound and incredibly - massively outwardly focused. I think missional living incarnationaly is the focus and the "community" vibe comes as a result of intentionally focusing out. I'll blog more tonight on some of my community thoughts! Peace.
Hey Dean - really cool,
Intentional, infectious, contagious, active, missional, focus, Jesus loving community.
- Amen.
Hey Dean...
Thanks for including us in your journey. It's been fun to read along with way.
Give my best to Rick. In his book, "Jesus in the Margins," he talks about the fact that "affinity" is not "community." How do you think a church rallies around shared values without becoming one more affinity group... and instead pursues true community?
And... is Emergent emerging as a true community or one more affinity group?
All our love from Grand Rapids...
Steve
ps. I'll play some U2 in your honor today...
Rick is a good guy - he's even making his first trip to Canada later this year to speak at a conference.
Cool you were able to get there.
Hey there,
I was recommended your blog today and I am trying to catch up, but thought that I would like to comment here, as I am personally very passionate about this topic.
When people talk about community these days, it can become something of a cacth phrase. However, when someone understands what true community is they know that it is more just centrally missional, but also incredibly demanding.
Imago Dei, from what I have heard and read, seems to be doing fairly well in that aspect of things. However, I do believe that the praxis of community deserves greater attention and development.
Great site, by the way, so thanks!
